Background
Background

Participate Sport Ltd is rapidly becoming the leading mass participation sports company in the UK through a commitment to the active sporting lifestyle by owning, promoting and delivering an event portfolio across cycling, triathlon, running and open water swimming.

Based in London and established in 2010 by extremely experienced individuals from the sports industry, Participate is building a team of industry leading professionals to create new events, acquire and build existing ones.  The event portfolio currently includes a number of the most exciting events in the UK including:
  • Cycletta; series of seven women only cycling events supported by Victoria Pendleton and British Cycling
  • Festival of Sport – Cornwall; the ‘Glastonbury’ of mass participation sports with triathlons, road cycling, beach running, open water swimming all over three days in Cornwall
  • British 10k London Run – UK’s 3rd largest running event with 25,000 people in Central London
  • Dragon Ride – UK’s most prestigious cyclo sportive event with UCI Golden Bike status, 4,500 cyclists
  • Etape Cymru – UK’s toughest closed roads cyclo sportive, 2,500 cyclists

The Participate team delivers these events in entirety specialising in commercial expertise, ground breaking marketing and world class event delivery; all with an overriding focus on delivering the best possible experience for participants, sponsors, media and charities.

Participate is building a series of brands through its operation.  Either event brands such as Cycletta (designed to become the ‘Race for life’ of cycling) and Festival of Sport, or building Participate as the umbrella brand across the portfolio.  Integral to this development is engagement with the participation community across a range of communication platforms, media (traditional, digital and social), database CRM, viral and many other sophisticated marketing and communication techniques.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, this role will be responsible for raising targeted revenue, through event entries, by developing and managing the marketing plans across each event.

Through hands on marketing, as well as management of agencies, the role will need passion, experience, creativity, energy and empathy to the customer.  In addition, being a team player with no inclination towards office politics is vital.

Skills & Experience Required
  • Customer/participant empathy.  (Participate needs to communicate to a diverse audience; from nervous first time cyclists to hard core endurance regulars.  Therefore the message needs to be appropriate and tailored to each audience).
  • Ability to secure and manage influential media and marketing partnerships, driving the ongoing relationships
  • Ability to build, develop and motivate a small, highly focused marketing team, and lead it to achieve Participate’s ambitious brand and marketing plans
  • Develop individual event marketing strategies with encouragement towards creative ground breaking initiatives
  • An entrepreneurial approach to unlocking new audiences and revenue streams through corporate and charity participation
  • Ability to extend a small budget into a well balanced range of communications through firm appreciation of a range of marketing channels
  • Inclination towards forensic monitoring of event entry numbers with ongoing assessment of each marketing initiative
