Background
Background

The NRL Telstra Premiership is the elite Rugby League Championship in the world with 16 teams across Australia (and New Zealand). With the 2012 season underway under the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), the NRL has never been in a healthier position. The Independent Commission has combined the governing bodies of the game in Australia creating greater opportunities for fan engagement and fan development alongside game development. Investment at NRL and Club level in Marketing and Membership strategy is seeing increases in match-day attendance and membership numbers across all clubs.

The Fan Development Manager is a newly created role within the NRL and will report into the Marketing Manager. The role will work closely with the Marketing, Memberships and Strategy teams at the NRL, ensuring greater levels of communication between the NRL, individual Club Marketing and Membership functions and the Australian Rugby League Game Development teams to identify consumer / fan engagement opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

The role will define how the NRL engages the Rugby League community and ultimately mobilise support for the game across all regions and demographics. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of a range of marketing and event based projects and initiatives which are ultimately aimed at developing and increasing greater support for all clubs.

This newly created role will marry regional game development activities to club marketing strategies, encouraging consumption of local club’s products and services this may include; ticket sales, membership, match day attendance, merchandise or other fan events. Responsibilities will be varied and project based, including:
  • Introduce fan based programs, events and initiatives to engage league supporters of all ages and encourage match attendance, membership and ultimately drive supporters up the hierarchy of involvement with the game.
  • Manage all fan development programs and initiatives across the NRL.
  • Design and lead the fan acquisition and development strategy, with a targeted focus across the different sections of market be that 'traditional' supporters, children, youth, women, young adults, parents, new migrants or new markets.
  • Work with the Fan Engagement, Membership and Marketing managers of the 16 NRL teams to ensure each has a strategy to build a solid process for marketing of membership and ticket sales.
  • Work closely with the Development Managers to ensure that they are trained in growing supporter interest in the game and develop strategies with them to create a culture of match-day attendance across the country.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful candidate will be proven in Fan / Consumer Engagement strategies. With a strong record of Consumer Marketing and an awareness of communication and engagement strategy (on all platforms). They will have an understanding of customer segmentation / CRM within an alternate sporting body, or a blue chip corporate with a clear consumer focus.

A creative marketer with the ability to be 'hands-on' in the delivery of new initiatives, the successful candidates must also be down-to-earth and able to communicate effectively across the Rugby League community. It is likely the candidate will have an understanding about the administration of sports in general and ideally passionate about Rugby League. An understanding of Rugby League and Junior Development programs would also be advantageous.
